Best Crossbows For Hog Hunting 2022

(Last Updated On: June 7, 2022)

More hogs are killed than whitetail deer in Texas. According to the documentation study, we ran the Texas Agrilife stats that shows some 750,000 hogs killed annually in the Lone Star State versus 600,000 whitetails.

Most of this hunting takes place in late winter when the deer season winds down and the options for hogs are open. It is super fun to hunt hogs with bows and crossbows, and it can be a challenging and successful way to take out some wild pork. We have listed some of the Best Crossbows For Hog Hunting below. Do check them out but before here are few tips for you.

Shoot when they exhale – Hogs are heavy breathers as they exhale, and the larger the animal, the more it gasps for oxygen. The same is true of individuals if you think about it, so picture a big person you meet running through the woods and stopping to eat unexpectedly. For sure, they’d wind them. Over the years, I have taught myself to release the arrow when the hog exhales if we can discern its breathing patterns. The less oxygen there is in the lungs of the hog, the sooner the animal dies.

Lube your arrows – Herb York, the former owner of York’s Archery in Buna, Texas, gave an excellent tip for hunting animals such as hogs that are difficult to penetrate.

Let them feed – Typically, small to medium-sized hogs run right in and start feeding. More vigilant would be the adult boars and sows. Before drawing back to take a shot, a bowhunter should not be ready to take a shot and let the hogs begin eating. They will be less focused on any sounds or gestures you make if they are relaxed eating and are concentrated in gobbling up whatever is on the ground, allowing you to make a simple, clean shot that converts to wild pork in the freezer.

Wicked Ridge RDX 400

Wicked Ridge RDX 400

The Wicked Ridge RDX 400 was launched in 2019 by Wicked Ridge as the line model. Wicked Ridge is a TenPoint brand, and they often release crossbows of top quality. The Wicked Ridge RDX 400, for little cash, should be a perfect reverse draw crossbow. Wicked Ridge is a maker of all-American crossbows. Engineered, designed, and checked in the United States right here! They manufacture better crossbows but at a lower price than TenPoint, their leading brand. Like the TenPoint Vapor RS470, TenPoint’s crossbows will cost up to $3000. The Wicked Ridge RDX 400 is a reverse draw crossbow and is the first flagship model that has been released so far. At an amicable price, it provides some high-end features. Let’s hope this Wicked Ridge RDX 400 will equal the quality crossbows of TenPoint!

Dimension & Weight

Since we use reverse draw technology for the Wicked Ridge, it is a more compact model than standard compound or recurves crossbows. The length of the RDX 400 is 32 inches and 15 inches high uncocked and 9 inches when cocked. At lbs 7.6. The crossbow is pretty light. Machined, Wicked Ridge used lightweight aluminum frames for the RDX 400. Reverse drawing technology moves the riser from the front of the crossbow to the center, eliminating the traditional crossbow’s nose-heavy feel and allowing a long power stroke for quicker and smoother firing. You will quickly note that it is perfectly balanced and not heavy when handling the Wicked Ridge RDX 400 for the first time.

Arrows & Speed

The Wicked Ridge RDX 400 is, as described before, a reverse drawing model. Reverse draw technology produces a long power stroke (15.5 inches) that generates more speed with less draw weight. The long power stroke also increases the distance the arrow nock is engaged with the string-a vital performance component, as the longer the nock stays involved with the string, the more precise the impact of the crossbow will be. Since the RDX 400 is a reverse draw crossbow, as the name might already mean, this small crossbow can still fire arrows at 400 FPS. The RDX 400 is one of the market’s cheapest and best-made reverse draw crossbows right now!

The Wicked Ridge RDX 400 comes with a 3x Multi-Line Scope from TenPoint. With a Pro-View Scope, you can select the RDX 400 as well. With the TenPoint 3x Multi-Line lens, I opted for the Wicked Ridge RDX 400. I can still adjust the scope to one that I have installed on one of my other crossbows at the moment. The TenPoint 3x Multi-Line scope has three crosshairs with a partial fourth line and is pre-sighted at 20 yards. It does the job well and, at 50-yards, you should be able to reach your mark very quickly. There is lighting in the Pro-view scope and comes pre-sighted at 25 yards. Ensure it’s sighted correctly, and during darker hours, you should be able to reach your targets very easily at 50-yards as well.

Assembly & Disassembling

It’s effortless to mount the Wicked Ridge RDX 400, although it isn’t the easiest crossbow to assemble. Like the Excalibur Assassin 400 TD, the RDX 400 is not precisely an easy crossbow to mount, so mounting the crossbow takes more than a few minutes. A ready-to-hunt kit is included in the RDX 400, which is not as easy to mount as some other crossbows. The foot stirrup and string stop are mounted first with a screw and a washer. Mount the quiver mount and bolt the scope to the frame after you’ve tightened the foot stirrup. It only took less than 15 minutes to assemble, and it is much simpler than a different TenPoint or Wicked Ridge crossbow model to make this crossbow.

Cocking the RDX 400 from Wicked Ridge is fast. The ACUdraw crank cocking mechanism is one of its distinctive features. The ACUdraw crank cocking system decreases the draw to just 5 lbs.! Cocking the crossbow is almost dead-silent if you use the ACUdraw crank. However, not all RDX 400 comes with the ACUdraw crank; you might get a rope sled to cock the crossbow if you order your RDX 400 outside of Amazon. The draw weight is still just around 9 lbs, with the rope sled cocking system. But it will make sure that you can fire the RDX 400 all day using the ACUdraw crank unit.

Trigger & Shooting

Unfortunately, the Wicked Ridge RDX 400 doesn’t have a trigger like the TenPoint Vapor RS470. The T4 trigger breaks at approximately 3 lbs on the RDX 400. Yet, there were a lot of slippages. Also, the precision the RDX 400 has to give is extreme. Again, we can improve the scope, but it’s not difficult to reach your target at 50 yards in small groupings. To minimize noise and vibration, the RDX 400 features an integrated String Stop System that fits into the barrel’s end. This makes it a very quiet crossbow for the RDX 400. The overall Wicked Ridge RDX 400 handles very well, rests nice, and is perfectly balanced in your hands.

Barnett Whitetail Pro STR

Barnett Whitetail Pro STR

Barnett is a business with over 50 years of hunting equipment experience. It should be no surprise that the Barnett Whitetail Pro STR is an example of the effort spent over the decades to produce durable crossbows that hunters will enjoy. This model is designed with longevity in mind, a piece of marvelous engineering. Be mindful that the high-quality components do not exactly make this crossbow the lightest on the market. Still, it’s much more convenient at 6.9 pounds than many other models in the market. Another benefit is that this crossbow’s construction makes it an outstanding option for any form of a hunter. You might find it the right choice for the times when you need to maneuver crowded places to get a good shot at your prey, seeing as you don’t have to worry about carrying a lot of extra weight.

The Barnett Whitetail Pro STR capable of up to 400 fps is not a model to be taken lightly. The 187 draw weight and 140 ft-lbs of kinetic energy will tell you how strong this crossbow is instant. The fact that it is balanced is one of the essential things that can be said about this model’s construction, making it more convenient to use. The weight is moved from the riser to the stock to ensure additional stability when taking shots. Overall, precision is also positively influenced by these design features. The camo pattern of the TRUBark HD will help you stay hidden in the jungle while your prey gets closer, totally unaware of your presence.

Barnett’s TriggerTech trigger system, known for its smooth, crisp and stable crossbow trigger, features the Whitetail Pro STR. A unique, free-floating roller between the trigger and sear is used by Frictionless Release Technology, improving precision through an extraordinarily smooth and light 3-pound motivation pull with zero creeps. Also, nock and ADF (anti-dry fire) sensors hold a spring-loaded safety bar in place before the arrow is seated correctly, shielding the user and the bow from accidental dry fire.

This model has different features that makes it such an excellent choice for someone looking for a fast and easy to use a crossbow. For example, a significant plus is the arrow retainer method. It consists of a self-adjusting bristle device that makes sure that your arrows do not drift away when you aim.

Vibrations & Noise

To be effective, your crossbow, no matter how great, needs to be silent. It would raise a commotion in the forest by firing a single shot, regardless of whether it reaches its target or not. Within your range, all the prey could catch wind that something is on the run and run away. So, if you buy the Barnett Whitetail Pro STR, you need to take full advantage of the string dampeners included with the kit you receive. More than decent sound reduction would benefit you, and that, in turn, will help you stay hidden from the wild animals running about.
